Past Projects

Each summer, 24 New York City high school students come to Columbia University to learn the fundamentals of engineering design and use their skills and knowledge to solve pressing global health needs. From guidance systems for the visually impaired to low-cost oxygen therapy kits, our students have consistently devised creative and effective solutions to the world’s health problems. Check out their work below!

2016

Cathalert

Cathalert_01

Problem

Safely inserting IVs without passing through the vein can be challenging even for experienced nurses and doctors.

Solution

Pressure-based sensor system that alerts the user once the IV has safely entered the vein.

4Sight

4Sight_01

Problem

White canes do not help the visually impaired to detect obstacles above waist level.

Solution

Glasses-mounted ultrasonic rangefinders alert the wearer to head-level obstacles.

Helios

Helios_01

Problem

Football players can reach dangerous body temperatures during summer practices, risking injury.

Solution

Small mouthguard-integrated thermometer that can be read remotely by a coach or trainer.

DreamBeat

DreamBeat_01

Problem

People with sleep apnea can stop breathing spontaneously during sleep, often without waking.

Solution

Comfortable, unobtrusive heart- and breathing-rate monitor can alert the patient to dangerous apnic events.

Ceraqua

Ceraqua_01

Problem

Potable water can be difficult to produce in low-resource setting.

Solution

Cheap, easy-to-operate, and fast manual water filtration system.

Dust Buster

DustBuster_01

Problem

People in highly polluted cities have no way of monitoring local air quality.

Solution

Wrist-wearable particulate detector that can alert the user to dangerous levels of pollution

Sterilizer

Sterilizer_01

Problem

Needles often get re-used in low-cost settings out of necessity, exposing patients and caregivers to risk of infection.

Solution

Low-cost, easy-to-use, heat-based needle sterilization system.

Freeing Girls’ Minds

Freeing_girls_minds_01

Problem

Female genital mutilation (FGM) leaves women with many long-term health challenges. Among these challenges is difficulty undergoing proper cervical screening.

Solution

Low-cost and simple device for safely collecting cervical tissue samples in FGM women.

The Fall Detectives

 The_Fall_Detectives_03

Problem

Elderly people are prone to dangerous falls that can leave them injured and unable to reach help.

Solution

Wearable fall-detection system that automatically alerts emergency services if the user suffers a fall.

OxyChem

The_Fall_Detectives_01

Problem

Supplemental oxygen is a common medical therapy, but oxygen gas is often unavailable in low-resource settings, negating the use of this powerful life-saving tool.

Solution

A simple system for combining yeast and hydrogen peroxide to produce oxygen for medical use.

Breathe Free

Breathe_Free_02

Problem

Low-resource hospitals often have poor air filtration systems, or none at all, leading to cross-infection of patients with airborne illnesses.

Solution

Low-cost, UV-based air filtration system that can safely filter pathogens from the air.

AntiThermia

Sterilizer_01

Problem

Athletes who perform outdoors can be at risk for hyperthermia, which can cause serious injury including brain damage and death.

Solution

Light-weight wearable personal body temperature monitor.
