STEAM the Streets

cropped green steam the streets

STEAM the Streets brings science and engineering experiences to students in unexpected places in New York City! Learners often experience science within the classroom, when in fact science is happening all around us: from the roots of trees pushing up sidewalks, to nests that sparrows build in lamp posts, to the steam that rises up from manhole covers. STEAM the Streets provides opportunities for learners to explore the science of their neighborhoods.

We will be at street fairs, city parks, community and church sponsored events, block parties, and other unexpected places within the five boroughs!

Come explore science books at the Uni portable reading room. Observe ants and other urban specimens through microscopes and magnifying glasses at a portable science lab developed in partnership with The Uni Project. We’ll be set up at this NYC DOT Weekend Walk event, hosted by SOS South Bronx and Morrisania.

Science+Sandbox

STEAM the Streets has been created through a grant from the Simons Foundation for their Science Sandbox Program. This initiative is dedicated to creative science engagement, with a particular aim of engaging people with the process of science in unlikely places in order to expand their critical thinking skills and empower them to make more informed decisions.
