What is the Hk Maker Lab? The Hk Maker Lab is an NIH and Pinkerton Foundation-funded initiative to expand engineering design education in New York City high schools. The core of Hk Maker Lab is an annual six-week summer program which brings 24 high school students to Columbia University’s Department of Biomedical Engineering to learn about the engineering design process and apply it to real-world problems.
A major goal of the Hk Maker Lab is to help create and disseminate high-quality engineering design-based STEM curricula for high school students. To do this, we are looking to form lasting partnerships with passionate secondary math and science teachers in New York City who want to introduce engineering into their school’s STEM offerings. Accepted teachers will join us during the summer program and participate in a co-learning environment where they will be introduced to the engineering design process in coordination with our students. During this time, the teachers will work together with Hk Maker Lab educators to create their own high school engineering design curricula. Hk Maker Lab will provide pedagogical and material support during the 2018-2019 academic year to help teachers as they implement engineering design-centric coursework at their schools.
To expand the presence of engineering design in high school education and assess the impact of engineering coursework on student outcomes, we aim to:
Hk Maker Lab seeks to build lasting partnerships with schools and educators. We offer support well beyond the summer of 2018, to ensure that our partners successfully introduce engineering design to their students. Benefits include:
All applications should carefully review the following dates and information to ensure that they are willing and able to attend all sessions (which take place at Columbia University’s Morningside Campus). Virtual workshops will be hosted online and will be scheduled in coordination with accepted applicants.
Eligibility and Application Process
